Well unlike some cosmetic procedures Rhinoplasty is a permanent change. (Barring accident or injury of course.) There are a few keys to getting the best results though. Some of it depends on your specific genes and body composition as those certainly play a role in the speed of your healing.

Outside of the gene pool, your personal outlook has a huge effect on your expectations and your happiness with the results of the surgery. Having realistic expectations for how your body will heal and look after healing will greatly contribute to your overall happiness with the procedure. That being said the Rhinoplasty procedures that are being performed today are more accurate, predictable and effective than any other time in history. What is the recovery and how long does it take?

Immediately following surgery, you will wake up with a splint on the outside of your nose and sometimes an additional splint will be used for support inside your nose. The first week after a nose job is the most challenging. Few people will experience headaches the first day or two and you will need to make adjustments to your lifestyle while you heal. Things like sleeping with your head elevated and avoid blowing your nose.

The first week after your surgery you will need to take a break from work and your normal responsibilities. That’s right, doctor’s orders! Time to relax. The first week after surgery is a great time to catch up on all those binge-worthy shows you’ve been saving on Netflix. (Just avoid anything that might cause you to shed a tear because you seriously can’t blow your nose.)

Most people find that cold compresses help with the initial swelling, and after about 10 days your splint will be removed. It’s at a point when people usually feel comfortable enough to return to their regular activities, although we advise limited activity and no strenuous workouts for 3 weeks after surgery. When your splint is removed, you’ll have a good idea of what your new face will look like although it’s common for swelling to continue for weeks to months as your face heals.

What do you need to know about Rhinoplasty?

The first question most people ask is, am I a good candidate for this procedure? We’re glad you asked, and that is actually a pretty short checklist.

Are you in good physical health? Good physical health will allow your body to respond better during surgery and heal faster afterward making the whole experience more comfortable for you.

Is your facial growth complete? Nose jobs are not recommended for young teens who are still growing. We don’t recommend having a rhinoplasty before you are 15 or 16 years old.

Do you have a positive outlook and realistic goals for this procedure? This is very important. The best candidates for Rhinoplasty want to improve the look of their nose but have realistic expectations of what’s possible, and what will best suit their facial structure, Dr. Larsen will provide you with digital images that will help you visualize your new look to aide in this process.
Are you a non-smoker? We all know the risks of smoking, but to be nose job specific here smoking can complicate the healing process and increase your risk of complication and infection. Nobody wants that.

If you said yes to all of those questions it might be time to make an appointment for a consultation. During your consultation Dr. Larsen will sit down with you, he can answer your questions and discuss your options. He will evaluate your facial structure along with the proportion and structure of your nose, then he will work with you to create a customized plan based on your goals.

Rhinoplasty is generally outpatient surgery (although arrangements can be made for an overnight stay, most people prefer the comforts of home), and is performed under general anesthesia. The type of surgery you will have varies by individual patient and is affected by your current facial structure and your goals moving forward.
